About Edmonton
Edmonton is the capital of Alberta and one of Canada's largest metropolitan areas. Settled in the late 1700's by Europeans seeking to establish fur trades with local aborigines, Edmonton is named after Edmonton in England, which was the hometown of the Hudson Bay Company's deputy governor at the time, John Pruden. The North Saskatchewan River is a popular area attraction along with the Waskahegan walking trail. The city is well known for its commitment to green space and has over 20 parks in and around the city. Other area attractions include minor league baseball, basketball, and lacrosse teams. The Edmonton Eskimos, a Canadian Football League franchised team, also make their home in Edmonton. For the art, science, or history enthusiast, there are nearly 75 museums and galleries to choose from. The Royal Museum of Alberta which is named for Queen Elizabeth II, houses a huge collection of natural history artifacts and the Telus World of Science center offers visitors a glimpse of the stars in the planetarium. Families often take advantage of the Valley Zoo, which houses 350 animals and has been in operation since 1959.
